What’s life like for LGBTQ people in Armenia? Let’s take a look at some of the key equality indicators.

### Is homosexuality legal in Armenia?

Yes. Same-sex sexual activity was decriminalised in 2003.

The decriminalisation of homosexuality was a pre-condition in order for Armenia to join the Council of Europe.

The age-of-consent is 16, regardless of sexuality.

### Are there anti-discrimination protections in place for LGBTQ people in Armenia?

No – there is no protection from discrimination on the grounds of sexuality.

### Is there Marriage Equality in Armenia?

No. There is no legal recognition of same-sex relationships.

Armenia’s constitution specifically restricts marriage to opposite-sex couples.

### What’s life like for LGBTQ people in Armenia?

Armenia is a socially conservative country and homosexuality is a taboo subject.

Homophobia is systemic, and LGBTQ people are forced to conceal their sexuality.

In the recent [ILGA report on LGBTQ Equality in Europe](https://rainbowmap.ilga-europe.org/countries/armenia/?ref=gtv.blue), Armenia was ranked in 45th position. With an overall score of 9.16%, Armenia scored some points on the criteria of Civil Society Space but failed to materially score on any of the other criteria assessed.
