What’s life like for LGBTQ people in Cabo Verde? Let’s take a look at some of the key equality indicators.

### Is homosexuality legal in Cape Verde?

Yes. The country’s penal code was amended in 2004, removing all provisions related to the prohibition of consensual same-sex sexual activity.

The age-of-consent is 14, regardless of sexuality.

### Are there anti-discrimination protections in place for LGBTQ people in Cape Verde?

Yes, there are anti-discrimination protections in place in relation to employment – protecting people against discrimination on the basis of sexuality.

These were introduced in 2008.

### Is there Marriage Equality for LGBTQ people in Cape Verde?

No. There is no legal recognition of same-sex relationships in Cape Verde. At this stage, there doesn’t appear to be any political appetite to address this.

### What’s life like for LGBTQ people in Cape Verde?

Cape Verde is seen as one of the more liberal countries in the region. This is partly because of the country’s links with Portugal.

While there are some instances of harassment and homophobic abuse, Cape Verde is seen as generally being fairly welcoming of LGBTQ people, and there is a visible LGBTQ community.
