The nominations for the Grammy Awards 2021 have been announced, and Harry Styles is nominated for best Best Pop Solo Performance for Watermelon Sugar.
Watermelon Sugar was a single released from Harry’s 2019 studio album, Fine Line. The single was released in May 2020.
Styles wrote the song with Mitch Rowland and the song’s producers, Tyler Johnson and Kid Harpoon. They were inspired by the American novel In Watermelon Sugar (1968) by Richard Brautigan.
Watermelon was a commercial and critical success for Styles, peaking within the top ten in more than 20 countries, including the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, and the United States, where it became Harry’s first number-one single on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
The music video for Watermelon Sugar was directed by Bradley & Pablo and filmed in Malibu.
Styles has also been nominated for Best Pop Vocal Album for Fine Line, as well as Best Music Video for Adore You.
The Grammy award winners will be announced on 31 January.
How queer is Harry Styles?
Obviously, we’re projecting a lot onto the video of Watermelon Sugar, but it made us happy to see that Harry wasn’t the only guy in the middle of all that watermelon touching.
“Am I sprinkling in nuggets of sexual ambiguity to try and be more interesting? No…” says Styles, in an interview with the Guardian. “In terms of how I wanna dress, and what the album sleeve’s gonna be, I tend to make decisions in terms of collaborators I want to work with. I want things to look a certain way. Not because it makes me look gay, or it makes me look straight, or it makes me look bisexual, but because I think it looks cool. And more than that, I dunno, I just think sexuality’s something that’s fun. Honestly? I can’t say I’ve given it any more thought than that.”
“What I would say, about the whole being-asked-about-my-sexuality thing – this is a job where you might get asked…” adds Styles. “And to complain about it, to say you hate it, and still do the job, that’s just silly. You respect that someone’s gonna ask. And you hope that they respect they might not get an answer.”
The best quotes from the Vogue interview
Along with some stunning photos by Tyler Mitchell, styled by Camilla Nickerson, there’s an interview written by Hamish Bowles.
Here’s some of our favourite quotes:
“As a kid I definitely liked fancy dress. I was really young, and I wore tights for that [a school play where he was cast as a mouse]. I remember it was crazy to me that I was wearing a pair of tights. And that was maybe where it all kicked off!”
“You can never be overdressed. There’s no such thing. The people that I looked up to in music – Prince and David Bowie and Elvis and Freddie Mercury and Elton John – they’re such showmen. As a kid it was completely mind-blowing. Now I’ll put on something that feels really flamboyant, and I don’t feel crazy wearing it. I think if you get something that you feel amazing in, it’s like a superhero outfit.”
“Clothes are there to have fun with and experiment with and play with. What’s really exciting is that all of these lines are just kind of crumbling away. When you take away ‘There’s clothes for men and there’s clothes for women,’ once you remove any barriers, obviously you open up the arena in which you can play. I’ll go in shops sometimes, and I just find myself looking at the women’s clothes thinking they’re amazing. It’s like anything – anytime you’re putting barriers up in your own life, you’re just limiting yourself. There’s so much joy to be had in playing with clothes. I’ve never really thought too much about what it means – it just becomes this extended part of creating something.”
Still the fan favourite?
Harry recently picked up a Billboard Music Award for Chart Achievement. This is a fan-voted category, demonstrating that Styles continues to connect with a large fan-base.
Harry was scheduled to be touring across North America this summer, however that’s obviously all had to be postponed.
The current plan is to postpone everything until 2021.
Directed by Ben Turner and Gabe Turner, the video for Golden has Harry running along narrow coastal roads. It looks like the south of France, but could be Italy? Wherever it is, Harry looks to be in good shape.
