For our podcast, Naked Men Talking, I caught up with [Manos](https://www.manosmag.com/?ref=gtv.blue) \- the man behind the Sheer Encounters social events in London.

In the conversation we talk finding community through underwear, subverting masculinity, and how a pair of stockings was his gateway drug.

**Sheer Encounters is a lingerie social for men - why was this an event that you wanted to organise?**

Mainly for a sense of community.

Growing up, I never really had a sense of community, especially in the queer scene. I struggled to fit myself in any space.

I found my love for lingerie through my photography work.

When you look at kink events, we have rubber, latex, leather that are so dominant. And there's barely any for lingerie. Often, people feel nervous because they're worried they might have to perform - sex-wise. They don't want to be too involved in sex - they just want to be admired and talk to each other in lingerie.

I thought, if there's a space that needs to hold that, then I could be the one to facilitate it.

**It was through photography that you unlocked this lingerie kink?**

I've loved photography since I was a kid.

I normally focus actually on products and still life because I get really shy talking to other people - especially when it comes to models in photography.

For the longest amount of time I was photographing myself. As I started building this portfolio in the kink genre, I was using myself as a model.

I thought, okay, how could I branch out? I love to dress up in anything. So I tried out latex, jockstraps - which I love, I love underwear. I was like, there's one thing I haven't tried - lingerie.

I bought one pair of stockings - as soon as I tried them on, I was like, this feels great, feels right, feels sexy. So I explored that more.

Then, someone gave me the chance to photograph them in lingerie and it just kind of snowballed from there.

**What is it about wearing lingerie that you're into?**

You feel a sense of vulnerability in lingerie. There's also that teasing aspect that I find really interesting.

**When you're wearing lingerie, are you taking on a different persona or is it just unlocking different sides of you?**

I've always been quite private. When I wear lingerie, I still do it for myself, even though a lot of people admire it, which is fun.

I love the juxtaposition of something so feminine on a male's body - it just enhances everything. Unfortunately, there are not that many brands that cater to men's physiques and sizes.

**This event that you've got coming up is the second edition of Sheer Encounters that you've run. Are there any changes from first time around?**

The first edition, I had life drawing - I had a model in lingerie and they had different poses, which I thought was really fun.

This time around, I want to include Shibari. I feel like Shibari and lingerie are quite similar in the sense of teasing and restriction.

**These are social events - they're non-sexual events. How do you navigate that sexual energy in a club space where everyone is wearing lingerie?**

At the beginning, I thought that I wasn't going to be able to control myself. I've also had so many people message me about it as well, asking: What if I get turned on?

It's natural, it might happen.

**Who are the men that are into the lingerie kink?**

Personality-wise, they're brave.

So many people message me to say that they love what I do but they'd be too scared to wear lingerie in public.

They'll go naked at a nude beach, they'll be naked at a sex-club, but the moment they dress in lingerie, they feel really vulnerable.

It takes courage.

At the last event, it was a mix of older guys and younger guys, loads of different body-types. It's all about the clothes themselves - that's what makes you sexy.

**That point about bravery must somehow be linked to masculinity?**

Exactly - that's something that I'm trying to dig deeper into.

**What was your relationship with your body like growing up?**

I grew up with a cleft lip. For my whole formative years everything was focused up here, not down there.

I've always been on the thinner side - I never really worked on my body because I was always working on my mind and my appearance up here.

I always saw my body as a vessel to be admired and not to be desired. With photography, that's why I use myself as a subject - I can distort my body and I can wear whatever and it doesn't have to look sexy. I'd rather look interesting than sexy. I use my body as a canvas.

**How does your lingerie shape the way that you experience sexual connection and intimacy?**

If they're wearing lingerie, great - if just my partner is wearing lingerie or if just I'm wearing lingerie or if we're both wearing it, I think it's pretty fun.

My love for lingerie stems from my love for underwear - even if they're just wearing a simple brief, that's fine, it adds an extra layer of sexiness and intimacy and tease.

**If someone was curious or interested in attending a Sheer Encounters event but they weren't sure that it was right for them, what advice or guidance would you give them?**

If you already have an interest in wearing lingerie and you own lingerie, come and wear it under your regular clothes. We have a changing area. Take off or put on however much you like.

If you're an admirer, it's still fine. Come and admire everyone else - just be respectful.

I understand that it can be daunting to put yourself out there and be vulnerable, but if you just do it once then I'm sure you'll be fine.
