There's plenty of dialogue - you can easily envision a stage adaptation. Initially, the set-up feels familiar - it's a sex-worker and his client. The sex-worker, Aaron, is played by Kieron Moore. The client, Hank, is played by Reed Birney. Where Tuttle pushes the boundaries is in the conversation that unfolds between Aaron and Hank. There are spoilers ahead - if you can watch this film before reading any reviews or spoilers, it will have more impact. Tuttle describes the film as "an essay on perversion" - saying that he wants to "take sex out of the conceptual space and make it feel uncomfortable, scary, and laced with significance." Hank's perversion is that he's a convicted pedophile. He was a teacher who sexually assaulted one of his students. Aaron's perversion is less clearly articulated - he's a FinDom, leaning into hyper-masculine tropes to satisfy the kinks and fantasies of his subscribers. What's compelling is the lack of judgement - both in the way that the film presents these characters but also in Aaron's response to Hank and his transgressions. It's very matter-of-fact, there's no moral outrage - even when Hank seems to seek this as a path to redemption. Tuttle is drawing on his own experiences to some extent. “I remembered how badly I wanted my history teacher to want to have sex with me..." writes Tuttle. "It was like the only thing I would think about in history class. I started to write an essay about that, and then I began to extrapolate who the character that I was fantasising about might have actually been. From there, it was easy to expand that idea into a story, with a fictional character as a stand-in for all the teachers I had been in love with.” The performances from Kieron Moore and Reed Birney are very strong - they're able to create believable characters that don't get lost in all the dialogue. The result is a watchable film - it holds your attention, there's an intrigue as the stories unfold, an anticipation to see where we're going to end up at the conclusion of this narrative arc. Ultimately, I'm not sure where we end up - and that's probably the weak-point in this film. Tuttle's big idea seems to be to present a pedophile character on screen and to explore that in an objective way. There doesn't seem to be a specific point of view or an argument being made. We don't really get any insights into human sexuality - Tuttle gives us an interesting conversation that may challenge our perceptions about taboo desires but it's a conversation that doesn't really mean anything in the bigger picture. This is Tuttle's debut project as a filmmaker - it's impressive work. Blue Film is worth adding to your watch-list.
