It's an uplifting story of resilience and the power of community. Written by Stephen Beresford, the film was critically acclaimed and embraced by queer audiences - it's a regular fixture on the annual lists of films to watch during Pride month. Beresford has now adapted his story into a stage musical - it's been running at the National Theatre in London since June of this year. It's been a huge hit - it's completely now sold out until the end of its run at the National, finishing there on 12 September. The good news is that the show will now transfer into the Bridge Theatre - beginning a run there from 12 November. If you loved the film, you'll love the musical. Directed by Matthew Warchus, the narrative unfolds at a satisfying pace and the simple set is used effectively. It will be interesting to see how the show translates into the bigger space at the Bridge. The addition of music complements the emotions of this story. Beresford has written the lyrics, with composition by Christopher Nightingale, Josh Cohen, and DJ Walde. There are a couple of strong numbers, supported by a live band. It's possible that we could see some evolution in the score as the production has a chance to take a fresh look at everything ahead of the transfer. It's a tight ensemble cast, with seven central characters who form the LGSM and the rest of the cast alternating between Welsh miners and London queers. Everyone brings a lot of energy and enthusiasm to their performance. There's no weak links. The biggest challenge with the production is that Beresford relies on a lot of exposition to tell this story - characters speaking directly to the audience to explain what's just happened and what's about to happen next. It's understandable but it would be great to find ways to do less of this - it distances the audience from the emotions of the characters. This is such a significant period of history for the UK and it's really powerful to have this specific story presented on stage in a way that everyone can connect with and feel part of. If you get a chance, go and see the musical adaptation of Pride.
