What's life like for LGBTQ people in Samoa? Let’s take a look at some of the key equality measures.

### Is homosexuality legal in Samoa?

No. Same-sex sexual activity is illegal. Punishment is up to seven years in prison.

It appears that this law is not currently being enforced.

There are some limited protections against discrimination on the basis of sexuality.

No. There is no legal recognition of same-sex relationshps.

While trans people are generally accepted within Samoan communities, homosexuality is seen as a taboo subject.

Negative perceptions regarding homosexuality were brought to Polynesia by Christian missionaries in the 18th and 19th centuries. Prior to this colonisation, same-sex sexual activity and relationships were widely accepted.
