What’s life like for LGBTQ people in Suriname? Let’s take a look at some of the key equality indicators.

### Is homosexuality legal in Suriname?

Yes. Same-sex sexual activity was decriminalised in 1869.

There remains inequality in the age of consent - for heterosexual sex it's 16 whereas for homosexual sex it's 18.

### Are there anti-discrimination protections in place for LGBTQ people in Suriname?

Yes. Protections against discrimination on the grounds of sexuality have been in place since 2015.

### Is there Marriage Equality in Suriname?

No. There is no legal recognition of same-sex relationships.

### What’s life like for LGBTQ people in Suriname?

Suriname is a socially conservative country. 

Homosexuality has generally been seen as a taboo subject, however attitudes are slowly changing.
