100 Heroes: Jim Fouratt

Jim Fouratt was a gay rights activist, actor, and former nightclub impresario.

He is best known for his involvement with the Stonewall riots and as co-founder of Danceteria in New York City.

Early life

Born in 1941, Fouratt grew up in a working class home in Rhode Island.

He began college in Baltimore but was expelled because it was discovered that he was homosexual.

He then moved to New York City.

Activism

Fouratt took up political activism more seriously in 1965, after being arrested in Times Square at America's first Anti-Vietnam war demonstration.

Fouratt was at the first night of the Stonewall Riots. He became one of the founders of the Gay Liberation Front.

He was active in ACT UP.

Music and nightlife

In the late 70s, Fourrat was working in nightclubs in New York City.

In 1980, he opened the nightclub Danceteria with Rudolf Pieper.

He was also active in record labels and signing artists.
