Senate Twink Sex Scandal

Senate Twink Sex Scandal

By now, you will have heard about the Senate Twink Sex Scandal - or Twinkgate, to use the lexicon of American politics.

To briefly recap, a staffer in the US Senate was filmed having sex in a congressional hearing room. That video is now all over Twitter.

It's been widely reported that the guy that is being fucked in the video is Aidan Maese-Czeropski - a legislative aide for Senator Ben Cardin of Maryland, a Democrat.

According to a statement by Cardin's office, Maese-Czeropski is no longer employed by the Senator.

So far, the identity of the other guy in the video hasn't been revealed.

The video was filmed in Hart 216 - the judiciary room of the Senate. Serious stuff happens in this room - it hosted the 9/11 commission hearings, and James Comey, the former FBI director, gave his testimony on Donald Trump there in 2017.

In a LinkedIn post, Maese-Czeropski did not address the video directly but said he was going through a difficult time.

“While some of my actions in the past have shown poor judgement, I love my job and would never disrespect my workplace...” he wrote. “Any attempts to characterize my actions otherwise are fabricated and I will be exploring what legal options are available to me in these matters.”

In the LinkedIn post, Maese-Czeropski also addressed an unrelated accusation that he accosted congressman Max Miller on Capitol Hill on Wednesday. Miller, who is Jewish, was speaking to a journalist when a staffer allegedly confronted him to shout “Free Palestine”.

“As for the accusations regarding Congressman Max Miller, I have never seen the congressman and had no opportunity or cause to yell or confront him...” wrote Maese-Czeropski.

Shocking, right?

Professor João Florêncio summed this up quite neatly on Twitter:

"The Senate Twink scandal has it all:

  • Defiled (purportedly) sacred institutions.
  • Gay sex "perverts" clutches pearls
  • "unprotected sex" clutches pearls
  • The gays twink/bottom-shaming while thirsting for the hung top
  • Revival of sex panics around gay public sex
  • Unsettling of the modern bourgeois public/private divide, or what's left of it.
  • Evidence that making work more like play is only good when it's about arcade machines/table tennis at work and dress-down Fridays, never anal.

There's a lot to unpack there.

It's not clear how the sex tape was released to the media - it was first published by a far-right media outlet in the US.

In simple terms, it's footage of two adult men having a consensual sexual encounter in a room where it appears that no one else is present.

While most workplaces probably don't condone having sex in the meeting rooms, and the Senate possibly has some additional workplace restrictions around security and personal conduct, this seems - to me - to be fairly iconic behaviour from Maese-Czeropski.

In a world in which systemic and institutional homophobia continues to flourish and is relentlessly stoked by the media, politicians, and public figures intent on punching down, it's never a bad idea just how radical it is to be a gay man. We have always existed outside the norms of polite society, we always will.

The personal is political. Gay sex is inherently subversive. Let's fuck the system up - literally!

Why do some gay men refer to themselves as Pigs?
Dr João Florêncio has done the research - the results are documented in Bareback Porn, Porous Masculinities, Queer Futures.
