Could Wes Streeting be the UK's first openly gay Prime Minister?
As Keir Starmer stumbles, the country could get a new leader.
Despite its big parliamentary majority, the recent local elections in the UK have tipped the Labour government into chaos, with Prime Minister struggling to retain control of his party.
Recent days have seen a slew of ministers resigning from the government and calling for Starmer's resignation.
One of the biggest names now publicly calling for change is Wes Streeting.
Resigning his position as Health Secretary, Streeting is making his intentions clear. While it seems that he doesn't yet have the numbers to mount a direct leadership challenge, he is strongly positioned to secure the party leadership should Starmer step down.
Born in 1983, Streeting has been a Member of Parliament since 2015. He represents the constituency of Ilford North.
Streeting became active in student politics while studying at Cambridge, and went on to lead the National Union of Students. You could describe him as a career politician and he is widely known to be ambitious.
Streeting speaks publicly about his sexuality - he identifies as a gay man. He is in a relationship with Joe Dancey - they are engaged to be married.
The LGBTQ community in the doesn't universally love Streeting - his statements and policy decisions around access to healthcare for Trans people are particularly problematic.
Streeting appears to be the leading leadership contender from the right-wing faction of the Labour Party. Other strongly positioned contenders from within the Labour Party are Andy Burnham and Angela Rayner.
Would Wes Streeting be the UK's first openly gay leader?
In simple terms, yes. No previous UK Prime Ministers have described themselves as gay or queer or homosexual.
However, it's difficult to compare people's experiences or identities from different periods of history.
There is a lot of speculation that Edward Heath might have been gay. Heath was Prime Minister from 1970-1974. Nothing has ever been confirmed but Heath never married and was described often as asexual. However there are numerous stories that he had sexual encounters with men.
