What to watch: Smoggie Queens

A chosen family in Middlesbrough navigates the ups and downs of queer life and drama.

What to watch: Smoggie Queens

I am late to the party on this but my there's nothing like a few long-haul flights to help you catch up on the films and television that you never quite got around to watching.

The best of the bunch was Smoggie Queens.

Originally released at the end of 2024, Smoggie Queens is a comedy that centres on a queer chosen-family in Middlesbrough.

Written by Phil Dunning - who also stars - the Matriarch of the family is Mam (Mark Benton) and her brood includes Dickie (Phil Dunning), Lucinda (Alexandra Mardell), Sal (Patsy Lowe), and Stewart (Elijah Young).

There's only six episode and it's a good blend of absurdist comedy, queer chaos, and affectionately observed insights about life, love, and friendship.

The good news is that a second season has been commissioned and should be hitting our screens later this year.

Definitely worth a watch if you get a chance to see it.
