Spain is officially Europe's best place to be gay!
An objective assessment has Spain coming out on top.
With a score of 88.7% in the latest ILGA report on LGBTQ Equality in Europe, Spain ranks in first place overall - moving up from 5th place in 2025 survey.
Spain lost points on the criteria of Hate Crime & Hate Speech and Intersex Bodily Integrity but outperformed all other countries in Europe - making it officially the best place in Europe to be gay.

In terms of LGBTQ Equality, Spain has seen a gradual increase over time, but it hasn't been a linear improvement - illustrating that a change in government or a shift in public opinion can quickly undo years of work in terms of building a society that embraces equality for all.

Given the positive scores that Spain has received from the ILGA assessment, it's unsurprising that Spain is one of Europe's hot-spots for gay travel. If you're looking for a beachside destination that delivers queer nightlife and welcomes queer travellers, Spain gives you multiple options to choose from - such as Barcelona, Sitges, Torremolinos, Gran Canaria, and Ibiza. Additionally, Madrid continues to be a big draw for queer travellers, with Madrid Pride a massive event each year.
